Life, Liberty, Politics and Policy in the Land of Enchantment!

I observed the Obama worship service on UNM's Johnson Field. The media says 45,000 people were there. It didn't feel that way, but there were certainly a lot of bodies under the night sky eager to receive blessings from The One.

"We love Obama," said Rebecca Ennis, who lives in Scottsdale, Ariz., and was in Albuquerque to visit her mother, who was with her at the end of the line. "We want to feel some of the energy." (as reported in the ABQ Journal).

It was part rock concert, part political rally but mostly a religious gathering.

"Obama! Obama! Obama!" the crowd roared. It was deafening on the ground. I could still distinctly hear their words a mile away back at my house.

I chanted "Heil!" in between their words until my wife made me shut up.

Have you noticed how many of the Obama tee shirts resemble Che Guevara couture? Same tilt of the head, same chiaroscuro printing. Seriously. You wander around Nob Hill (aka "Obamaville") and everyone is wearing these shirts that look like uniforms with Obama's face on the front. I've gotta try a fist-bump salute and see if I get an answer.

The fist-bump salute? You haven't seen it? Close each hand into a fist. Bump them, knuckle to knuckle, at the top of your chest, then straighten each arm outward, opening your hands flat like blades parallel to the ground.

There's something very un-American about this cult. Something very troubling. Something very frightening. Obama has taken the Cult of W and racheted it up to heights never seen in this country. If he steps into power, he will also have the expanded powers W granted himself in his silent sabotage of the Constitution. Has anyone heard anything about Obama wanting to cede any of those powers? No, he's standing on W's shoulders and reaching for even more centralized power with every new policy proposal.

Obama seems like a programmed robot...programmed by the Bill Ayers - Counter Culture, Radical Left, which had it's roots in the 60's Revolutionary groups such as the Black Panther Party and the Weather Underground..

Bill Ayers basically recruited Obama...Obama's political career was pretty much launched by Ayers and company, if I'm not mistaken.

Sarah Palin bought up an interesting question the other night...she wondered what did Bill Ayers see in Barack Obama...why did Ayers want to work with Obama?
if you ask me, I think Ayers saw that Obama would be a perfect 'tool' that the Radical left can use to promote and advance their agenda...
Just as Dave Foreman and other founders of eco-terrorism picked Martin Heinrich. His career was launched in Foreman's living room, over lots of beer and talk about rewilding the continent. Why the GOP has let this pass in this campaign is unfathomable.
For the same reason that the nominated the Manchurian Senator, John McClown, as their presidential candidate. Whatever that reason was, it sure was stupid.
Come on, Jim. First, the marketing of Che's image is as American as you can get, as is wearing t-shirts emblazoned with our mottos, beliefs, and, not least, our mockeries. Your own column in the Alibi about the presidential gear on sale (which was quite amusing) gets at this. Beyond that, having large crowds show up at rally's conducted by charismatic and compelling leaders is actually as American as Apple Pie. Just go back in time and look at our history. If anything, Obama has cut through the marketing B.S. and appealed to the public on that level, which in this era of hyper-managed political campaigns isn't an easy thing to do. What's sad--in actuality--is that we don't have more leaders who are able to spur such political engagement. On any side.

But all this aside, it's disturbing to me that you're now taking up the "un-American" charge. You are seriously implying that all those people who showed up at the rally are un-American. Jeez. I guess I could seriously engage on this...I'd start by asking you who gets to decide what's "American" versus "un-American." And does calling large segments of the American public "un-American" qualify as an "American" thing to do?
Adulation of political leaders is not American. Ecstasy over giving someone power over our lives...unAmerican, indeed. It is something of which we should be wary. We should always distrust our political leaders. The Founders knew this well. That's why we have checks and balances. Presidents are supposed to be public officers, not idols. What I saw at UNM Johnson Field was more like something we saw in Europe in the 20's and 30's, especially the fervent chanting of the Great Leaders' name. We must be on guard against cults of personality, always, whether those cults arise on the Left or on the Right. Actually, when it reaches this feverish pitch, it's hard to tell the difference. Maybe that's why we forget that Mussolini and Hitler were class war socialists and we think they were Right Wingers.

As for the Che tee shirts being American, would you say the same thing of Hitler tee shirts? They both killed to further their ideologies. They both thought they could take human life if it got in the way of their plans for power. Hitler was on a scale far beyond Che's accomplishments, sure. But they were both murderers.
Is the Republican adoration of Ronald Reagan un-American?

I can't believe you're equating great enthusiasm for an American presidential candidate to the fascist rallies of Hitler and Mussolini. Is Democracy supposed to be a staid affair in your mind?
The fist bump salute, in case you missed it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxJ7t3U3TDg

Adoration is a term best left to the religious sphere. When politics becomes a religion it crosses into fascism, or at least lays the groundwork for that to occur.
I wish I could find a good video of those cheerleaders who open McCain's rallies. Not to mention the crowds chanting McCain!...McCain!...McCain!

Pom Pom's...fist bumps...both are pretty American, especially when paired with chants. You don't agree? Tell it to the Tampa Bay Ray's:

Let's go way back in history...to the very beginning of the Republican Party. Were the "Wide Awake" clubs un-American? Only if you think supporters of Abe Lincoln, many of whom were inspired to end slavery, were. From an account in the NYT in 1895:

"After the meeting Mr. Lincoln, escorted by Mr. Sill, entered an open carriage. Several hundred young men closed in around the vehicle, and, forming spontaneously in military ranks, accompanied the vehicle in progress to the house of Mayor Timothy M. Allyn. They saluted their favorite with storm after storm of enthusiastic cheers."

As to proto-fascism, is this the route we really want to travel? Do I have to point out the similarities between "Country First" and "Fatherland First"? Who's trying to segment the country with labels like "pro-america" and "patriotic"?
I am glad we are both attuned to the fascist undercuts at work in this country. I hope you are prepared to fight Obama's efforts to increase the power of the Presidency. His power play is already in the works. Congress is a willing participant. There is no power that Bush has given himself that Obama is going to surrender. Eyes open. Study up on fascism. Bush primed the pump. Obama will open the faucet.
Lincoln did more damage to our limited Constitutional Republic government and to expand the executive powers than any other President.
The people at the Obama rally are American all right, but they are certainly not watching c-span archives for evidence of how any of their candidates voted on subjects that are now considered part of the campaign issues. Obama has been able to capitalize on their ignorance by playing up his good looks and eloquence.
It is a mob mentality generated by someone with a voting record of a mobster. One could say there were tens of thousands of sheaple in attendance. Brace yourselves for a really tough four years, Obama is the Manchurian candidate.
Obama is the Manchurian candidate

Obummer isn't a Manchurian anything -- he's just got everyone in his camp chanting mindlessly on cue when he's not spouting off cliches and profound nothings.
